Description: After opening up to the outside world in the late fifties of the twentieth century, the third Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, popularly known as the “Father of Modern Bhutan”, aspired to secure a role for the young Bhutanese in the global community. Realizing that education is very important for the socio-economic development of a country he wanted the students in Bhutan to catch-up with the scientific and technological developments in other parts of the world. With this vision in mind, His Majesty the third Druk Gyalpo established the first ever English medium public school at Kanglung in 1968 and named it Sherubtse, meaning ‘the peak of learning’ with the motto “Education for Excellence”. Sherubtse was upgraded into a Junior College in 1976 and started offering degree courses in 1983 in affiliation to the University of Delhi. Sherubtse became a constituent College of the Royal University of Bhutan in 2003. Sherubtse – today is one of the oldest and the biggest Liberal Arts College in Bhutan with over 1700 students.
